Description

Notice

As of the date of this (July 28, 2026), we are not aware of any posting on the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) website identifying four (4) or more distinct manufacturers of battery-powered natural gas alarms that comply with the applicable requirements

Natural Gas Alarm Installation Deadline

New York City property owners are required to install approved natural gas alarms on or before January 1, 2027.

This requirement is established by Local Law 102 of 2025, which amended Local Law 157 and the New York City Building Code.

Why the Deadline Is January 1, 2027

The law required the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) to determine whether at least four distinct manufacturers offered compliant battery-powered natural gas alarms.

  • If four or more manufacturers were available, the installation deadline would remain January 1, 2027.
  • If fewer than four manufacturers were available by July 1, 2026, the deadline would automatically be extended to January 1, 2029.
  • On June 15, 2026, the NYC Department of Buildings officially announced that it had identified at least four compliant manufacturers. Therefore, the deadline will NOT be extended and remains January 1, 2027.

Installation Requirements

Natural gas alarms must:

  • Be approved and installed in accordance with NYC Building Code Section 908.13.
  • Comply with all applicable DOB rules, including:
  • 1 RCNY §908-02
  • 1 RCNY §3616-06
  • Be installed in all locations required by the Building Code and DOB regulations.

Buildings Covered

The law applies to residential buildings required to install natural gas alarms under the NYC Administrative Code and Building Code.

For certain Class B Multiple Dwellings, an approved line-operated zoned natural gas detection system with central annunciation and central office tie-in may be used instead of individual battery-powered alarms, where permitted by code.

Important Legislative Changes

Local Law 102 of 2025:

  • Changed the installation deadline to January 1, 2027.
  • Replaced references to Building Code Section 908.10 with Section 908.13.
  • Repealed former Section 908.10 and created the new Section 908.13 governing natural gas alarms.
  • Required the DOB to evaluate market availability before July 1, 2026.

Final Status

Current NYC Requirement

  • Deadline: January 1, 2027
  • Extension: No
  • Reason: DOB confirmed that at least four compliant battery-powered natural gas alarm manufacturers are available.
  • Compliance Standard: NYC Building Code §908.13 and applicable DOB rules.
