NO SMOKING SIGN LOCATION REQUIREMENTS

Required Sign Placement

"NO SMOKING" and "NO ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE USE" signs should be posted in conspicuous locations where they are clearly visible to residents, visitors, employees, and the general public. In residential buildings, signs are typically installed at building entrances, lobby areas, near elevators, inside common hallways, laundry rooms, recreation rooms, and other shared indoor spaces where smoking and electronic cigarette use are prohibited. Signs should be positioned at eye level and maintained in a legible condition so occupants are continuously informed that smoking and vaping are not permitted in these common areas.

Building Owner Best Practice

For maximum compliance, building owners should install at least one sign:

• At each main building entrance

• In the lobby or vestibule

• Adjacent to elevator banks

• Near mailboxes or building information boards

• In laundry rooms and community rooms

• At additional common areas where residents regularly gather

This helps ensure the building's smoke-free policy is clearly communicated to all occupants and visitors.
