HOW TO RECYCLE IN NYC

Recycling is required by law in New York City. Residents should separate recyclable materials and place them in the proper recycling bins. Ask your building manager, superintendent, or property owner where recycling containers are located.

MIXED PAPER

Recycle the following items:

• Newspapers

• Magazines

• Catalogs

• Mail

• Office paper

• School paper

• Paper bags

• Envelopes (including window envelopes)

• Paperback books

• Shredded paper

Do Not Recycle:

• Hardcover books

• Wax-coated paper

• Soiled or greasy paper

• Tissue paper

CARDBOARD

Recycle the following items:

• Shipping boxes

• Moving boxes

• Cereal boxes

• Shoe boxes

• Pizza boxes (clean)

• Paper towel rolls

• Toilet paper rolls

• Paper egg cartons

Before recycling:

• Flatten cardboard boxes

• Bundle or bag boxes if required

• Remove packing materials when possible

METAL

Recycle the following items:

• Food cans

• Beverage cans

• Aluminum trays

• Aluminum foil

• Empty aerosol cans

• Metal pots and pans

• Empty metal containers

RIGID PLASTIC

Recycle the following items:

• Plastic bottles

• Milk jugs

• Detergent containers

• Yogurt containers

• Plastic food containers

• Plastic laundry baskets

GLASS

Recycle:

• Glass bottles

• Glass jars

CARTONS

Recycle:

• Milk cartons

• Juice cartons

• Soup cartons

• Beverage cartons

DO NOT RECYCLE

Do not place the following items in recycling bins:

• Batteries

• Plastic bags

• Plastic film or wrap

• Styrofoam or plastic foam

• Squeeze tubes

• Pouches

RECYCLING TIPS

• Empty all containers before recycling.

• Rinse containers when necessary.

• Caps and lids may remain on containers.

• Keep recyclables clean and dry.

• Place materials only in designated recycling bins.

CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENTS

To protect personal information:

• Remove address labels if desired.

• Tear up unwanted mail.

• Shred confidential documents before recycling.

APPLIANCE DISPOSAL

Special disposal requirements may apply to refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and other appliances containing refrigerants. Follow NYC disposal requirements before placing these items out for collection.
