Stairway Sign Installation Guide

Simple Installation Instructions

1. Install the Stairway Identification Sign Beside the Door

Recommended location: On the wall next to the door (door jamb)not on the door itself.

Recommended mounting height:

  • Mount the sign so the centerline is 60 inches (1525 mm) above the finished floor, which is the standard mounting height used for tactile signs.

Why?

  • If the door is open, a sign mounted on the door cannot be seen.
  • A wall-mounted sign remains visible whether the door is open or closed.
  • Building and fire codes require stairway identification signs to be readily visible in both the open and closed door positions.

2. Install Signs on Both Sides of the Door

Hallway (Corridor) Side

Install:

  • STAIR A / STAIR B sign (or stair designation).
  • Floor Number sign (Floor 1, Floor 2, etc.).
  • "Fire Door – Keep Closed" sign if required by the fire door assembly.

Stairwell Side

Install:

  • Stairway Identification Sign.
  • Floor Number sign.
  • "Fire Door – Keep Closed" sign.

This allows occupants to identify the stair and floor from either side of the door.

3. Why Install on the Wall Instead of the Door?

Better Visibility

  • When the door swings open, a sign mounted on the door disappears from view.
  • A sign mounted beside the door is always visible.

Better Accessibility

  • Easier for occupants to locate the sign.
  • Reduces confusion during an emergency.

Better Code Practice

  • Stairway identification signs should be installed where they remain visible with the door open or closed.

4. Typical Stairway Signs

  • Stairway Identification (STAIR A, STAIR B, etc.)
  • Floor Identification (Floor 1, Floor 2, etc.)
  • Exit Level Sign (where applicable)
  • Roof Access Information (where required)
  • "Fire Door – Keep Closed" sign (where required)

Best Practice Summary

✔ Install signs beside the door, not on the door whenever possible.

✔ Mount the sign with the centerline 60 inches (1525 mm) above the finished floor.

✔ Install signs on both the hallway side and the stairwell side.

✔ Install "Fire Door – Keep Closed" signs on both sides of fire-rated stair doors where required.

✔ Ensure signs remain visible even when the door is open.
