Description

Professional Sign Installation Guide

ADA Tactile, Wayfinding & Architectural Sign Installation Manual

Purpose

This guide provides detailed instructions for the proper installation of ADA tactile signs, room identification signs, directional signs, stair signs, floor identification signs, projecting signs, ceiling-mounted signs, and other architectural signage.

Correct installation helps ensure:

  • ADA compliance
  • Professional appearance
  • Long service life
  • Proper accessibility
  • Consistent building aesthetics

Before You Begin

Before installing any sign, verify the following:

✔ Sign schedule

✔ Room numbers

✔ Floor plans

✔ Mounting locations

✔ Wall finish

✔ Door swing

✔ Required clearances

✔ Customer approval

Never install signs until:

  • Painting is complete
  • Wallpaper installation is complete
  • Final wall finishes have fully cured
  • Installation surface is clean
  • Installation surface is completely dry
  • Construction dust and debris have been removed

Proper surface preparation is essential. Dirt, dust, oils, or uncured finishes can significantly reduce adhesive performance and may result in premature sign failure.

Tools Required

Recommended tools:

  • Laser level
  • 24-inch bubble level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Painter's tape
  • 70–90% isopropyl alcohol
  • Microfiber or lint-free cloth
  • Drill
  • Masonry drill bits (when required)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wall anchors
  • Silicone construction adhesive (when required)
  • Rubber roller (recommended)
  • Safety glasses
  • Step ladder

Surface Preparation

Clean the installation surface using:

  • 70–90% isopropyl alcohol
  • Lint-free microfiber cloth

Remove all:

  • Dust
  • Oil
  • Grease
  • Wax
  • Silicone residue

Allow the wall to dry completely before installing the sign.

Recommended Installation Temperature

Ideal Installation Temperature

60°F–90°F (16°C–32°C)

Avoid installation on:

  • Freezing surfaces
  • Wet walls
  • Freshly painted walls
  • Extremely hot exterior surfaces

ADA Mounting Height

The ADA Standards require:

  • Lowest tactile character baseline: 48 inches minimum
  • Highest tactile character baseline: 60 inches maximum

For consistency throughout the building, installing tactile signs with the centerline at 54 inches above the finished floor is recommended whenever practical.

Door Location

Install ADA tactile signs:

  • On the latch side of the door whenever possible.
  • If insufficient wall space exists, install on the nearest adjacent wall.
  • Maintain approximately 2–3 inches from the door frame whenever practical.

Clear Floor Space

Maintain a minimum clear floor space of:

18 inches × 18 inches

This space should remain outside the door swing so individuals reading the sign are not struck by an opening door.

Door Mounted Signs

Mounting tactile signs directly on a door is acceptable only when all of the following conditions are met:

  • Push side of the door
  • ADA-compliant automatic door closer
  • No hold-open device

If these conditions are not met, install the sign on the adjacent wall.

Double Door Installation

If one door leaf is inactive:

  • Install the tactile sign on the inactive leaf.

If both doors are active:

  • Install the sign on the adjacent wall to the right of the doorway whenever possible.

Visual Signs

For visual-only signs:

  • Character height: 2 inches or smaller
  • Lowest character baseline: 40 inches minimum
  • Highest character: 70 inches maximum

Centering visual signs at approximately 54 inches is recommended whenever practical for a consistent appearance.

Projecting & Ceiling-Mounted Signs

Maintain a minimum clearance of:

80 inches from the finished floor to the bottom of the sign.

Ensure signs do not interfere with:

  • Doors
  • Emergency equipment
  • Fire alarm devices
  • Sprinkler systems
  • Means of egress

Mounting Methods

1. Adhesive Tape

Recommended for:

  • Acrylic signs
  • Plastic signs
  • Aluminum signs
  • Smooth interior wall surfaces

Installation Procedure

  1. Dry-fit the sign.
  2. Confirm final alignment.
  3. Peel the adhesive backing.
  4. Apply the sign firmly.
  5. Press evenly for 30–60 seconds.

2. Screw Mounting

Recommended for:

  • Heavy signs
  • Exterior signs
  • Metal signs
  • Framed signs

Installation Procedure

  1. Mark mounting holes.
  2. Drill holes.
  3. Install anchors if required.
  4. Tighten screws evenly.
  5. Do not overtighten.

3. Silicone Construction Adhesive

Recommended for:

  • Textured walls
  • Exterior installations
  • Heavy signs
  • Uneven surfaces

Use silicone construction adhesive, not silicone sealant. For maximum holding strength, construction adhesive may be combined with double-sided mounting tape.

Alignment Tips

For professional results:

  • Use a laser level whenever possible.
  • Verify horizontal alignment before permanently mounting.
  • Maintain consistent spacing between signs.
  • Align multiple signs using a common centerline.
  • Maintain consistent offsets from door frames throughout the building.

Recommended Installation Sequence

  1. Stair signs
  2. Floor identification signs
  3. Elevator signs
  4. Restroom signs
  5. Room identification signs
  6. Directional signs
  7. Informational signs

Installing signs in a consistent sequence helps maintain alignment and improves overall project quality.

Common Installation Mistakes

Avoid the following:

  • Installing on dirty walls
  • Installing before paint has fully cured
  • Crooked or unlevel signs
  • Uneven spacing
  • Incorrect mounting heights
  • Installing inside the door swing
  • Using silicone sealant instead of construction adhesive
  • Blocking fire protection or emergency equipment
  • Installing tactile signs on active doors unless ADA exceptions are satisfied

Final Quality Checklist

Before leaving the job site, verify:

☐ Correct sign location

☐ Correct room number

☐ Proper ADA mounting height

☐ Correct latch-side placement

☐ Level installation

☐ No visible adhesive squeeze-out

☐ No scratches or fingerprints

☐ Protective film removed

☐ Secure attachment

☐ Sign is clean and readable

☐ Required floor clearances maintained

☐ Door operation unobstructed

☐ Installation photographs taken

Best Practices

  • Install tactile signs with the centerline at approximately 54 inches whenever practical.
  • Verify the sign schedule before drilling or applying adhesive.
  • Always use a laser level for professional alignment.
  • Use silicone construction adhesive in addition to mounting tape on heavy signs or textured walls.
  • Follow ADA mounting height requirements, latch-side placement, and clear-floor-space requirements.
  • Review all project drawings before installation begins.
  • Inspect every installed sign before leaving the job site.
