Subject: Extension and modification of deadlines for installing natural gas detectors in NYC buildings
1️⃣ New Installation Deadline
- The deadline to install approved natural gas detecting devices is extended to:
January 1, 2027 or might be January 1, 2029
- Applies to:

2️⃣ Updated Code References
- Replaces prior reference to Section 908.10 of the Building Code.
- Now requires compliance with Section 908.13 (new section created).
- Updates Administrative Code sections to align with the new standard.
3️⃣ Class B Multiple Dwellings Option
Instead of individual unit alarms, Class B multiple dwellings may install:
- A line-operated zoned natural gas detection system
- With:
- Central annunciation
- Central office tie-in
- Coverage in public corridors and public spaces
- Subject to DOB and FDNY rules.
4️⃣ Market Availability Clause (Key Change)
By July 1, 2026, the Commissioner must determine whether:
- At least 4 distinct manufacturers produce compliant battery-powered natural gas alarms.
If fewer than 4 manufacturers are identified:
- The installation deadline automatically extends to:
January 1, 2029
5️⃣ Repeals
The law repeals:

Sections 908.10, 908.10.1, and 908.10.2 of the NYC Building Code.
These are replaced by new Section 908.13, which establishes updated requirements for natural gas alarms.
6️⃣ Effective Date

The law takes effect immediately upon enactment.
